SmartRoughing
Physics-based roughing that adapts to the real machining process
Traditional roughing often relies on experience to balance productivity, tool life and machine limits. SmartRoughing reduces that reliance on experience by bringing machining physics directly into the toolpath calculation, using information about the machine, tool, material and cutting conditions to automatically optimize cutting parameters.
Powered by MAL’s (Manufacturing Automation Laboratories, Inc.) advanced physics models and Kennametal’s lab-tested cutting coefficients, SmartRoughing predicts cutting forces and optimizes feeds, speeds, stepovers and depth of cut. Finishing complex geometric parts often involves a trade-off: mesh-based approaches offer robustness, while NURBS-based machining delivers greater geometric accuracy and surface quality.
SuperFinish combines the best of both worlds in a single finishing solution. It uses mesh-based calculations where robustness is needed and NURBS-based strategies when high-quality geometry is available, delivering accurate, collision-free toolpaths without relying on unnecessary triangulation.
